Unit 4 Revised Image and Justification

This is my revision of an image I made on the 5 pillar s of the Islamic faith. I decided to make the image because the one I found online, which you can find on the post two before this one, was confusing. I used my partners' suggestions to add color and make the text bigger. Color is important in this image because it makes the layers of information (268) more distinct. I did not use a specific color scheme because each of these five pillars are cornerstones of Islam. If these pillars went from most important to least important, making the colors go from bold to light would have made the most sense. As I mentioned in the last post I revised this image with the intent of improving upon the effectiveness of the 3 C's, which are making it more concentrated, concise, and concrete (102). I think that I accomplished all three of these if you compare this image with the original one I found on the internet.

Unit 4 Usability Comments from Partner

I like the way the image is much clearer. Yes I think you should add color to the pillars and triange. The words on the bottom where you describe each pillar should have a bigger font. I had a hard time reading it. Other than that I really like what you did.

Unit 4 Challenge Activiy

In this activity I will take ideas from the selection chapter and modify an image in a constructive manner. The topic that this activity deals with is the Five Pillars of Islam. These five ideas are taught to high school students in World History class. This first image is the one that I came across.I did not think this was a very effective image because I think it does not fulfill any of the 3 C's, which are concentrated, concise, and concrete (102). It is not concentrated because the information is so spread out, it is not concise because there is too much information visually, and it is not concrete because it is not very easy to visualize. Here is the image that I came up with to address these areas.

The idea of implementing figure-ground is that you want the learner to focus on what is critical (102). I thought that by making the pillars say the meaning and putting the key words in bold, I addressed the major shortcomings of the original image. Please let me know how I can improve this image even more. Should I add color to each pillar? Should the text be bigger or smaller? Thanks for your input.

Unit 3: Revised Image

Here is my revised image from the challenge activity. I took the usability comments from my partner to make some necessary changes. The first change I made was to make the word melting get smaller as the word goes on, as if the word is actually melting. I also made the word gradually go from being blue (cold) to red (hot). The other word I changed was skiing. My partner suggested that the word was a little vague because there are multiple was of skiing, so I adding pictures of skis to replace the i''s. I think with these changes that elementary students would better understand the words by the way they look.

Unit 3 Usability Comments from Partner

I like your word choice and I think the top two do a great job of using the word to express their meaning. The word melting I wonder if you could have the word sort of melt off start off bigger and then get smaller as the word goes on. The word skiing I am assuming you are relaying down hill skiing since you have it going downwards. Just wanted clarfication on that one. I wouldn't add color to this assignment since we are just talking about type, I think. The words look good in black and white. But another thought melting could be done in red to show heat. I hope this helps.

Unit 3 1st Draft

I chose to do the challenge activity that asks to design words that express their meaning. The target audience for an activity involving these words would most likely be elementary or middle school students. This activity would stress the importance of font selection. Fonts are so important as the style of a word or group of words conveys a message to the reader before they even begin reading the actual words.
In this example, each of these words describes itself in some way. For the word condense, I made the letters bold and so close together it almost looks unnatural. The word blurry is hard to see and it almost hurts your eyes to look at, as I'm sure all who wear glasses have experienced many times. For the word melting, I tried to make the word appear to be dripping away. Finally, for skiing I chose a simple sans serif font that is tilted down, as if it were going down a mountain like a skier.
How could I improve these words? Would adding color or more detail make these words more effective?

Unit 2: Usability Revised

This is my revised image laying out the steps of knighthood. There are two main changes that I made to the image. The first change was to make each stage a different color. This was done so viewers of the image could chunk information more easily. As for the colors, I just picked ones that were dark enough to see. I thought green was appropriate for pages because they are the youngest. The second change was to make each stage bigger in relation to the age. Overall I think these two changes make the image more effective.
